The Algarve region of Portugal - information on bus and train services

This is an unofficial website compiled by a resident of the Algarve. It has come about as a result of many enquiries in various forums. No responsibility can be accepted for any problems caused by errors or omissions.

This site is not connected with, nor endorsed by, any official operator or organisation. I welcome any feedback, comments and suggestions.

In all cases I strongly recommend that you check times locally at the bus terminal etc as timetable changes are usually made without prior warning!

All timetable pages carry the date on which I was last able to verify the times as being correct. I have used almost all the buses and trains myself.

NEWS and updates - latest - 20th November 2009

CHANGES TO BUS TIMES

Not as extensive as first I thought. Changes affect buses on schooldays around Loulé and Almancil so will matter little to most readers. Relevant pages have been updated. Otehr than that, no changes to report.

FORTHCOMING PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

Please note that TUESDAYS December 1st (Independence Day) and December 8th (Immaculate Conception) are public holidays here in Portugal. Trains and buses will run to Sunday times and there may be alterations to long distance services on the Monday as well, so do check with the relevant company if intending to travel around those days.

LAGOS - FARO - SEVILLE BUS

I can confirm that, despite what the printed timetable states, the Lagos <> Seville buses will run DAILY through the winter except that there will be no service on Christmas Day or New Year's Day.

THANK YOU

This site is being visted about 500 times a month. May I thank you for the positive comments and feedback I am receiving.

PORTO, BRAGA, COIMBRA  AND GUIMARÃES

I visited these northern cities (they are NOT in the Algarve!) and picked up some information about local trains, trams and buses while I was there. I have added information to this site, which I hope will be of help if you are planning to visit any of these places. They are a long way from the Algarve, so a day trip is not possible. They are all quite pleasant! Porto  Braga Coimbra Guimarães.

Contents - summary

For list of all the timetables on the site clck jere – BUT YOU ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO READ THE GUIDANCE NOTES first as, at first sight, the operations here can be a bit complicated.

An alphabetical list of all the places in the Algarve served by bus and train is here. The list below shows the most frequently consulted pages in the site.

DISABLED OR FIND IT HARD TO GET AROUND? DEFICIENTE? UNTAUGLICH? HANDICAPÉ?

Please click here for some personal observations on this issue - you will have problems using the buses and trains in the Algarve.

Why the site exists

I have built this site of local bus and train information here in the Algarve in response to many queries raised through various forums. The information is not 100% complete but is being improved and updated all the time.

The main idea is to allow visitors and potential visitors to plan ahead by getting an understanding of the local bus operations and the places they serve – and don’t! I recommend that wherever possible you check times locally.

Schedule changes are not very frequent but do happen and without advance warning. Neither the website nor the bus station posts are used for this type of information and changes do happen without my being aware.

I live in the Algarve and use these buses and trains as I do not drive. Not all routes and services are included – I have left out those unlikely to be of use to visitors, for example some short schooldays only runs and certain services to places that run only once a day, or less.

I have however included some 'once a day' routes just to show what you cannot do in some of the more remote areas of the region.

As much as possible has been checked on the ground eg by using the buses concerned and/or obtaining the printed timetables, which are NOT published on the bus company’s websites.

The official website of the major local operator, EVA, can be found at www.eva-bus.com ; the other company Frota Azul also a website. Both have limited timetable information about buses to and from main destinations only plus fares between major points. Also there are often differences between the information on the websites and the timetables at the bus stations etc. I use the printed information.

Some of the city and town councils operate local 'mini-bus' type routes around town and include information on their websites. I have included links in various pages as required. Please not that most tickets are NOT interchangeable between these and other buses.

I would be pleased to receive any printed timetables. If you can scan or photo them please email them to me. I can then include the data in these pages.
