The Algarve region of Portugal - information on bus and train services

This is an unofficial website compiled by a resident of the Algarve. It has come about as a result of many enquiries in various forums. No responsibility can be accepted for any problems caused by errors or omissions. This site is not connected with, nor endorsed by, any official operator or organisation. I welcome any feedback, comments and suggestions. In all cases I strongly recommend that you check times locally at the bus terminal etc as timetable changes are usually made without prior warning!

All timetable pages carry the date on which I was last able to verify the times as being correct. I have used almost all the buses and trains myself.

BUS OPERATORS ELSEWHERE IN PORTUGAL

I have separated the information I have found about bus operators in other parts of Portugal to a new page.

NEWS and updates - latest - 30th July 2010

NO UPDATES UNTIL 12 AUGUST

I will be unable to update any pages with first hand information until 12 August. There are unlikely to be any changes to times but I apologise in advance should the bus companies srping one of their surprises. If you discover any changes, please let me know by email.

SUMMER BUS TIMETABLES IN THE ALGARVE

Summer timetables, where different, came into effect on several routes on 1st July and are effective until the second weekend in September. I have been able to confirm summer  times for almost routes and pages have been suitably updated. I have found no differences with summer 2009 services..

LATER BUS TO AND FROM ALBUFEIRA STATION

A later daily bus has been added to and from Albufeira station. This leaves Albufeira Bus Station at 2115, arriving at 2125. This will connect with the 1840 train from Lisbon Oriente due in at 2134, which continues to Faro. The return bus to Albufeira leaves the station at 2140. A couple of other buses on this route have had their times adjusted but the majority still do not connect with trains! Full details on this page.

LAGOS - FARO - SEVILLE BUSES SUMMER TIMETABLE CONFIRMED

The summer timetable for the Lagos - Faro - Seville buses is confirmed. Details here. As in previous summers, there are two fast buses each day plus the two slower journeys, giving a total of four buses each day. The summer timetable applies until 6th September.

TRAIN AND BUS FARES INCREASED FROM 1st JULY

Train and bus fares increased by a small amount as from 1st July. This is because the 5% rate at which tickets are subject to VAT increasing to 6%. Some lower fares are not increased at all, most others by a few cents. Pages are being updated as and when I have the confirmed new information.

EXTRA TRAINS FARO <> LISBON IN SUMMER

CP has confirmed that the 1920 train Lisbon (Oriente) to Faro and the 1858 train Faro to Lisbon (Oriente) will run daily until 31st August as they have done in previous years. Please note however that, according to the printed timetables concerning the 1920 from Lisbon, the connecting train from Tunes to Portimão and Lagos runs only on Fridays and the connecting train from Faro eastwards to Tavira etc runs only on weekdays. This differs from the on-line timetable!

THANK YOU

This site is being visted about 500 times a month. May I thank you for the positive comments and feedback I am receiving.

DISABLED OR FIND IT HARD TO GET AROUND? DEFICIENTE? UNTAUGLICH? HANDICAPÉ?

Please click here for some personal observations on this issue. You will have problems using the buses and trains in the Algarve.  I am able-bodied by the way!

Why the site exists

I have built this site of local bus, train and ferry information here in the Algarve in response to many queries raised through various forums.

The main idea is to allow visitors and potential visitors to plan ahead by getting an understanding of the local public transport operations and the places they serve – and don’t! I recommend that wherever possible you check times locally.
Updates are continuous. Whenever I go somewhere, I check the information. Each timetable bears the date on which I was last able to verify it as being correct. Schedule changes are not very frequent, but do happen and usually without advance warning. Neither the website nor the bus station posts are used for this type of information and changes do happen without my being aware.

I live in the Algarve and use these buses and trains as I do not drive. Not all routes and services are included – I have left out those unlikely to be of use to visitors, for example some short schooldays only runs.

So far as I am aware, I have on the site the timetable of every inter-urban bus route in the Algarve. I have not included full details of some of the local 'city' bus type operations. In some cases eg Lagos they have an excellent website to which I can redirect. In other cases eg Faro and Portimão the published information ranges from the poor to non-existent. You should make enquiries at the local bus station or tourist information office if required.

As much as possible has been checked on the ground eg by using the buses concerned and/or obtaining the printed timetables, which are NOT published on the bus company’s websites.

The official website of the major local operator, EVA, can be found at www.eva-bus.com ; the other, smaller, company Frota Azul also a website. Both have limited timetable information, on buses to and from main destinations only, plus fares between major points. There are often differences between the information on the websites and the timetables at the bus stations etc. I use the printed information.

Some of the city and town councils operate local 'mini-bus' type routes around town and include information on their websites. I have included details and/or links in various pages as required. Please note that tickets are NOT interchangeable between these and other buses.

I would be pleased to receive any printed timetables. If you can scan or photo them please email them to me. I can then include the data in these pages.
